About Julie

Hi! I’m Julie Bogart.

I’m a writer, thinker, educator, and mother. I put all of these roles into a blender and out came Brave Writer, the award-winning writing program I created over 25 years ago.

Too many kids report that they hate writing. Too many parents report that they hate teaching it! As a professional writer, I had a hunch that kids could learn to write (and enjoy it) the same way professional writers taught writing to adults. I put my theory into practice; the results have been astonishing! Turns out: it is possible for children to learn to write well without tears or ruining their relationship with you.

As a result, some parents call me the “Homeschool Fairy Godmother.” I homeschooled my five now-adult children for seventeen years. I understand firsthand both the challenges and the remarkable rewards of educating kids at home.

My best-selling book, The Brave Learner, has helped countless home educators feel more confident and joyful in their daily work, while Raising Critical Thinkers provides the clarity parents need to guide their children toward discerning, thoughtful engagement with our complex digital world. My newest book, Help! My Kid Hates Writing (arriving April 2025), blends my passion for writing and thinking well into a practical, entertaining resource for transforming reluctant writers into confident, brave communicators.

Our Brave Writer students have gone on to win awards in writing, to earn PhDs in literature, to become writing instructors, and even published poets and novelists. We’ve served over 250,000 families in 191 countries. In 2017, Xavier University awarded me the Madges Award for Service to Society for my achievement with Brave Writer. In 2024, Brave Writer was named a top ten woman-owned business (out of 5,500 businesses) by the National Association of Women’s Business Owners.

I’ve spoken at conferences all over the world and keep active on social media and Substack. Through my online coaching community, Brave Learner Home, and the Brave Writer podcast, I offer ongoing support and encouragement to parents around the globe.

When I’m not working, you’ll likely find me sipping a cup of British tea, birdwatching in my backyard, or curled up with a good book. I’m also wildly enthusiastic about grandparenting!

In addition to many radio interviews and television appearances, I’ve had the honor of being a guest on some of the best podcasts!

  • “Here’s Where It Gets Interesting” (Sharon McMahon)
